AS THE Evening Echo’s West Cork correspondent for the past three years, I’ve written many stories and features on the Irish fishing industry.

The daily challenges confronting Cork fishermen– the impact of rising fuel costs, falling fish prices, cheap imports, over-regulation and criminalisation – have all been well documented.

I wanted to take my greater understanding of the industry in Ireland, mesh it with my long-standing interest and university studies on African affairs, and see how the sector operates abroad. Having secured funding from the Simon Cumbers Media Challenge Fund, I boarded a KLM flight bound for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in January this year.

Accompanied by photographer Diane Cusack, I set off on an incredible journey that brought me from the largest fish market in eastern Africa, to the eerie shores of Lake Victoria and onwards to the paradise islands of Zanzibar
